Quantitative Meteorologist - Energy Trading d/f/m

RWE
locationEssen, Deutschland
VeröffentlichtVeröffentlicht: vor 1 Woche
Inklusive Berufe
Vollzeit

RWE Supply & Trading GmbH

To start as soon as possible, full time / part time, permanent

About the role

Ready to use your meteorological expertise where weather forecasts influence real commercial decisions? Join RWE Supply & Trading's international weather team and combine applied meteorology with data science and engineering to help our traders understand how changing weather conditions could impact global energy and commodity markets.

This is a role for someone with a genuine background in weather or meteorology who also enjoys working with data, models and technology. Your analysis will be used directly by trading teams, giving you visibility, autonomy and the opportunity to turn complex atmospheric information into practical insight.

  • Evaluate and verify numerical weather prediction and forecast model outputs, identifying biases, uncertainties and changes relevant to trading decisions
  • Analyse ensemble forecasts and large weather datasets using statistical and quantitative methods
  • Translate complex meteorological developments into clear, timely and actionable insight for traders and market analysts
  • Develop bespoke analytical tools and visualisations that improve how weather information is interpreted and communicated
  • Build, maintain and optimise robust data pipelines supporting weather analysis and forecasting workflows
  • Work closely with meteorologists, data specialists and trading teams to improve models, tools and analytical processes
  • Explore new datasets, methods and technologies that strengthen our understanding of weather-driven market risk

Job requirements and experience

  • A strong academic or professional background in meteorology, atmospheric science, weather forecasting or another directly weather-focused discipline
  • Hands-on experience analysing weather forecasts or weather model outputs, with an understanding of concepts such as forecast verification, ensemble interpretation and model uncertainty
  • Strong quantitative and statistical analysis skills, with experience working with large and complex weather or atmospheric datasets
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with practical experience developing data workflows, analytical tools or pipelines
  • Confident working in a collaborative team environment, sharing expertise and translating technical findings for non-specialist stakeholders
  • A curious and proactive approach, taking ownership of your work and continuously looking for ways to improve forecasting and analytical processes

Advantageous, but not essential

  • Experience applying meteorology or weather analytics within commodity, energy or another trading environment
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and production data pipelines
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques applied to weather forecasting or atmospheric data
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau or similar platforms

What we value most is someone who continuously demonstrates courage, thrives to create impact and seeks to build trusting, collaborative relationships. So, even if you think you do not yet display all of the skills listed above we would still like to hear from you.

Further we welcome applications from individuals who may not be able to commit to full-time roles. At RWEST, finding the right person for the job is our top priority, and we are willing to explore flexible arrangements.

We want to ensure your time with us is fulfilling and rewarding. We offer a comprehensive package designed to support your well-being as well as your personal and professional growth. Here's what you can look forward to:

  • Build and improve bespoke weather analytics, tools and data solutions with the freedom to explore new approaches
  • Develop your commercial understanding of how weather affects energy and commodity markets
  • Access continuous personal and professional development as you deepen both your meteorological and technical expertise
