Senior Engineer – Camera Optical Design


Location: Jena, Germany

Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of imaging and optical technology? Join an innovative R&D team developing the next generation of advanced camera and imaging systems.


As a Senior Optical Design Engineer, you’ll take ownership of challenging projects from initial concept and optical architecture through simulation, prototyping and product development. You’ll work on sophisticated imaging technologies including fixed-focus and zoom systems, freeform optics and other emerging optical solutions.


Role outline:

  • Design and develop novel imaging optical systems and drive technical innovation.
  • Translate application requirements into concepts, simulations, prototypes and working solutions.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex optical design challenges.
  • Perform advanced optical analysis including ray tracing, optimisation, tolerancing, stray light and yield analysis.
  • Identify emerging technologies and turn new ideas into practical solutions and intellectual property.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and international teams, research partners and industry experts.
  • Build experimental setups, develop proof-of-concepts and contribute to a strong R&D environment.
  • Share your expertise through technical publications, conferences and patents.


Your experience:

  • Strong experience designing and developing advanced imaging optics.
  • Excellent knowledge of geometrical, physical and/or diffractive optics.
  • Hands-on experience with optical design and ray-tracing software.
  • A structured, analytical approach to solving complex engineering problems.
  • The confidence to communicate technical ideas at both engineering and senior leadership level.
  • A proactive, self-driven mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-moving R&D environment.
  • Fluent English and the ability to work effectively in an international, multicultural team.
  • A PhD in optics or a related field
