🚀 Principal Engineer (MVDC Circuit Breakers)
Nuremberg
We’re looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to lead the development of next-generation medium-voltage DC (MVDC) circuit breaker technology.
This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of power electronics, protection systems and high-voltage engineering — combining advanced simulation, hands-on prototyping, laboratory testing and collaborative research to solve some of the most challenging problems in modern electrical networks.
⚡ What you’ll be doing
🔧 Design & develop next-generation MV circuit breakers
Lead the design, simulation and testing of MV circuit breakers across vacuum, solid-state and hybrid technologies, with a particular focus on ultrafast MVDC interruption and next-generation protection architectures.
🧲 Push actuator technology further
Design, model and optimise coil actuators, balancing speed, electromagnetic performance, reliability and practical implementation.
🧪 Turn concepts into working technology
Develop MV/MVDC test circuits, build prototypes and lead high-voltage laboratory testing. Use simulation and experimental data to validate performance and drive continuous improvement.
🌍 Lead research & technical collaboration
Work with universities, research organisations and technology partners on advanced topics including smart grids, fault protection and high-speed switching. Help translate research into publications, patents and real-world technology.
💡 Shape the technology roadmap
Explore new approaches to MVDC interruption, fault mitigation and protection — while ensuring designs meet relevant IEC/IEEE standards.
🧠 What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone with deep technical expertise and a genuine passion for solving complex power-system challenges.
You’ll ideally have:
- 5+ years’ hands-on experience in MV/HVDC protection, circuit breaker development, fault analysis and interruption technologies.
- Strong knowledge of hybrid circuit breakers, ultrafast protection, MVDC breakers and innovative interrupter technologies.
- Experience with DER integration, including PV and BESS applications.
- Expertise in electromagnetic and thermal modelling for high-power applications.
- Experience with real-time simulation and/or FPGA-based control systems.
- Knowledge of vacuum or gaseous circuit breaker technologies is advantageous.
- A track record of research, publications or collaboration with universities/research institutions in MV protection or related fields.
- Experience providing technical leadership within circuit breaker development or other complex engineering programmes.
- A creative, analytical mindset and the ability to turn challenging technical problems into practical solutions.
