Construction Site Manager

gt Group is an executive search agency. We are recruiting for one of our clients—a power infrastructure construction company operating in Germany, Poland, and internationally. We are currently looking for a candidate to join the client’s German team and strengthen their Substation Projects Department (construction, reconstruction or modernisation of HV and EHV substations) with their knowledge, experience, and competencies.


Lead Construction Manager (f/m)

Place of work: 100% on sites


What organization needs from this role?

  • Planning and preparing the execution of on-site works, including organising work fronts and planning the sequence of works, resources, materials, equipment, deliveries and workforce requirements.
  • Developing, updating and continuously monitoring detailed construction schedules in line with the project master schedule and agreed milestones.
  • Coordinating and managing the day-to-day work of in-house installation crews, subcontractors, suppliers and other site contractors; ensuring effective coordination across trades and work fronts.
  • Ensuring that construction works are carried out on time, safely and in accordance with technical documentation, quality requirements and applicable procedures.
  • Monitoring work progress, workmanship quality, resource utilisation, crew productivity and agreed key performance indicators (KPIs); preparing site progress reports and providing regular updates to the Project Manager.
  • Identifying construction, technical, material supply, organisational and scheduling risks and implementing preventive measures; immediately escalating to the Project Manager any risks affecting the project scope, schedule, cost or safety.
  • Identifying deviations from the schedule, technical documentation, quality standards, resource plan or work programme at an early stage; implementing agreed corrective and acceleration measures and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Planning, allocating and optimising internal and external resources, including submitting requests for personnel, subcontractors, materials, equipment and services in accordance with company procedures.
  • Monitoring construction costs, material consumption, workforce utilisation and subcontracted services; identifying opportunities to optimise costs, time and resources and submitting recommendations to the Project Manager.
  • Maintaining complete construction documentation, including site diaries and daily reports, progress reports, quality records, inspection and acceptance records, photographic records, records of changes, hindrances, delays and defects, and as-built documentation.
  • Documenting additional works, scope changes, hindrances, delays and potential claims on an ongoing basis and providing the Project Manager with complete supporting evidence for contract administration under VOB/B and change order and claims management (Nachtragsmanagement).
  • Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety, fire safety and HSE requirements, safety instructions and local site regulations; responding to unsafe situations and implementing preventive measures.
  • Working directly on-site with the client, the client’s site supervision representative, designers, technical teams, suppliers and subcontractors; participating in site meetings, coordination meetings and acceptance inspections.
  • Organising inspections, functional checks, testing, defect rectification, pre-handover activities, technical acceptance, commissioning and handover to the client for operation, in cooperation with the Project Manager, technical team, client and the client’s site supervision representative.


What are the requirements?

  • University degree in electrical engineering or civil engineering.
  • At least three years of experience as a Site Manager, Works Manager or Construction Lead on the construction, reconstruction or modernisation of HV and EHV substations.
  • Proven experience working on construction projects in Germany or other European countries.
  • Experience organising and coordinating in-house installation crews, subcontractors, suppliers and technical service providers.
  • Native-level fluency in German or German language skills at a minimum of C1 level - enabling the candidate to manage on-site construction activities, conduct correspondence, analyse contractual documentation and work directly with the client.
  • Good command of English at B1 level - enabling effective communication with supervisor.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly MS Excel and MS Project.
  • Willingness to travel on business and be present on-site throughout the construction project in Germany.
  • Category B driving licence.

Nice to have

  • Practical knowledge of German standards, regulations and technical rules applicable to electrical power engineering works, particularly DIN, VDE and DIN EN standards.
  • Working knowledge of GstarCAD and AutoCAD.
  • Project management certification, such as IPMA or PRINCE2
